Three books I read and would recommend for anyone to get an understanding on the trafficking that is happening around the globe and in America today. I have included descriptions and each title is linked to Amazon. Any questions, please comment and I will be more than happy to answer!

Take a stand against trafficking today!

book11) Sold – Patricia McCormick

Lakshmi is a thirteen-year-old girl who lives with her family in a small hut on a mountain in Nepal. Though she is desperately poor, her life is full of simple pleasures, like playing hopscotch with her best friend from school, and having her mother brush her hair by the light of an oil lamp. But when the harsh Himalayan monsoons wash away all that remains of the family’s crops, Lakshmi’s stepfather says she must leave home and take a job to support her family.

He introduces her to a glamorous stranger who tells her she will find her a job as a maid in the city. Glad to be able to help, Lakshmi journeys to India and arrives at “Happiness House” full of hope. But she soon learns the unthinkable truth: she has been sold into prostitution.

An old woman named Mumtaz rules the brothel with cruelty and cunning. She tells Lakshmi that she is trapped there until she can pay off her family’s debt—then cheats Lakshmi of her meager earnings so that she can never leave.

Lakshmi’s life becomes a nightmare from which she cannot escape. Still, she lives by her mother’s words— Simply to endure is to triumph—and gradually, she forms friendships with the other girls that enable her to survive in this terrifying new world. Then the day comes when she must make a decision—will she risk everything for a chance to reclaim her life?

Written in spare and evocative vignettes, this powerful novel renders a world that is as unimaginable as it is real, and a girl who not only survives but triumphs.

book22) The Slave Next Door: Human Trafficking and Slavery in America Today – Kevin Bales

In this riveting book, authors and authorities on modern day slavery Kevin Bales and Ron Soodalter expose the disturbing phenomenon of human trafficking and slavery that exists now in the United States. InThe Slave Next Door we find that slaves are all around us, hidden in plain sight: the dishwasher in the kitchen of the neighborhood restaurant, the kids on the corner selling cheap trinkets, the man sweeping the floor of the local department store. In these pages we also meet some unexpected slaveholders, such as a 27-year old middle-class Texas housewife who is currently serving a life sentence for offences including slavery. Weaving together a wealth of voices–from slaves, slaveholders, and traffickers as well as from experts, counselors, law enforcement officers, rescue and support groups, and others–this book is also a call to action, telling what we, as private citizens, can do to finally bring an end to this horrific crime

book33) God in a Brothel: An Undercover Journey into Sex Trafficking and Rescue – Daniel Walker

This is the true story of an undercover investigator’s experiences infiltrating the multi-billion dollar global sex industry.

It is a story of triumph for the children and young teens released from a life of slavery and the rescuer who freed many hundreds of victims leading to the prosecution of dozens of perpetrators. And it is a story of haunting despair for those left behind in corrupt systems of law enforcement.

It is the personal story of Daniel Walker, one man who followed a path of costly discipleship, agonizing failure and unlikely redemption.

And it is a challenge to God’s people to join in the battle that all might be freed.

“…know the weight of your moment in history…” – Girls With Swords

Do you know that you have a divine purpose and have been chosen, equipped, armed and commissioned as a strategic part of this spiritual battle raging daily around us?

C.S. Lewis said: “There is no neutral ground in the universe; every square inch, every split second, is claimed by God, and counter-claimed by Satan.”

Too few recognize that they have been divinely placed in where they are and in the time that they are in for a reason. It is time for women to reach a recognition of position. As daughters of the King there is a measure of authority that you walk in. However, it is your choice as to the position that you take in this battle be it an unarmed civilian, victim, a prisoner of war, or a hero. There is no safe middle ground.

Lisa states that women taking hold of their identity is a crucial part to taking up their swords (the Word of God) with the power and authority that is delegated to them.

Riddled with profound truths  Girls With Swords is a must-read for women. It is all about recognition of position and recognition of who God is.

You are a target. The attacks that you experience have much more to do with who you might be in the future than who you have been in the past. “…know the weight of your moment in history…” If you have ever wondered why you are here, what your purpose is, who you are or why you are in the circumstances that you are, this is the book to read. You have a divine purpose in your time at this very moment. Girls With Swords will open your eyes to the war, the weapons and the worth! I highly recommend it.

Other books by Lisa Bevere include:

Lioness Arising, Nurture, Fight Like a Girl, Kissed the Girls and Made them Cry, and The True Measure of a Women. These are just a few of her titles and each come highly recommended.

Lisa Bevere is a best-selling author, international speaker and co-host of The Messenger television program.

Get Lost: Your Guide to Finding True Love – Book Review

Get LostTitle: Get Lost: Your Guide to Finding True Love

Author: Dannah Gresh

Rating: 4/5 stars

Release Date: April 2, 2013

Click here to watch the Get Lost book trailer.

You see him walking down the hall, (what do you mean who? Don’t ask me who. You know who I’m talking about!) and all the sudden your mind begins to move at a  whirlwind speed! Will this be the day that he finally notices you! How long has it been since you have wanted him to see you? How long have you waited to get his attention? And still, if you do get it, how far will you go to gain his affection? How much do you really need him?

Maybe it has been the same guy for months or years even. Or maybe it is a different guy every week. You can’t seem to help yourself with these feelings. It is a longing in your heart that you can’t describe – the need to be noticed and the need to be recognized and loved. It is as if you cannot be complete without him. And he doesn’t even realize everything he is to you.

You desire and you want…you push yourself further every time.

This is just an example of the violent craving that Dannah addresses in her book, Get Lost, to be released on April 2nd. Not only does she talk about the craving, but she also talks about the cure. Included in this book Dannah walks you through a 10 day “love feast” and finally the fulfillment. This is a book about God and guys and how we can sometimes get them mixed up.

“Discover how to get so lost in God that a guy has to seek Him to find you.”

Love can be a complex word. We love our family, we love our friends, we love our food? The English language by far is lacking in the area of what love really is. Dannah goes though scripture and talks about the Hebrew and Greek words for love and what they mean. In example, Hesed is the Hebrew form of love to describe the God kind of love for us. In the Greek, this love is called agape. This love is unfailing, and is not rooted in emotionalism or circumstances – it is a love that is about the other and not oneself. This is the love that we really desire, and long for, and that is offered to us, but dear one will you respond?

Get Lost with God as Dannah leads you through a 10-day love feast that will lead you to countless days in the love and presence of our Lord.

So what are you waiting for? It’s time to get lost!

A Kingsbury Collection – Where Yesterday Lives, When Joy Came to Stay, On Every Side – A Review

KingsburyCollectionOne thing that I have learned is that when it comes to Karen Kingsbury, you simply cannot put a book down and when it is finished, you feel like you just have to read another! It is so easy to fall in love with the characters and be captured by the truths that she weaves through each of her novels. Inspirational, without a doubt, A Kingsbury Collection is a book you will read cover to cover, leaving you feeling like you lived through it all. The best part is, since this is a collection, when you finish one book, you can move on to the other. This collection includes, Where Yesterday Lives, When Joy Came to Stay and On Every Side.

Where Yesterday Lives is about a journalist named Ellen Barrett. Upon her Father’s death, she returns home to her four siblings and to the yesterdays filled with haunting memories that left her scared, the faith she had long forgotten, and the love that she left behind. But there were also other yesterdays that she missed, and the happy times that she and her family once had. Karen weaves this story so beautifully with reconciliation and peace. Where Yesterday Lives will give you a new perspective of your own yesterdays and even your todays and tomorrows.

In When Joy Came to Stay, Maggie Stovall is forced to face her past when she loses control of the identity that she fought for so long to portray fails as she spirals into a deep depression resulting in her deserting her faith, her church and her foster kids as well as serving her husband divorce papers. Maggie checks into a mental hospital fighting to overcome her depression, while her husband begins to search Maggie’s past for answers. In the midst of all this, there is Amanda Joy who comes into the picture with such a faith! This is such a beautiful story that will keep you turning the pages!

On Every Side is about a newscaster, Faith Evans. This book really caught my interest with a mix of political issues (addressing separation of church and state), conflicts that rise out of a history between characters all in a big mix of social injustice! Way to hit it! Jordan Riley really makes the story! Although this is not my favorite of Karen’s books, it still has the ability to capture you and draw you in to wanting to read more!

All in all, Great books to read! I highly recommend getting A Kingsbury Collection. You will be captured by the truths, the characters and how it is expertly weaved together!

21 Days of Never-the-Same – Day 17

In his continuation of When Heaven Invades Earth, Bill Johnson writes The Supernatural Power of a Transformed Mind: Access to a Life of Miracles to share what the “normal Christian life” should look like and how that is accomplished. Johnson tells of the message he writes as “an attempt to address a very abused subject – the mind of the believer” (p. 27). Doing so requires “a revolutionary approach to Christian Living — a return to the authentic” (pg. 30). This requires redefining what “normal” Christianity is, in which Johnson explains, “the normal Christian life means miracles, spiritual intervention, and revelation. It means peace, joy, love, a sense of well-being and purpose.” (pg. 31)

The bottom line is this: “we were put here to do the will of God on earth as it is in heaven” (pg. 31). This can only be done with a mind that has been renewed.

Some of the topics covered in this book include:

  • Your mind
  • Revelation and Understanding
  • Forgiveness
  • Enduring Uncertainty
  • Dreaming with God
  • Inheriting the Supernatural

On the topic of your mind, we read about how unnatural it is for a Christian to not have an appetite for the impossible and the effects that the renewing of the mind can have on the Christian life. On revelation and understanding, revelation opens up new realms of living. Stressing the importance of that, Johnson writes: “The spirit of revelation opens up our knowledge of who God is, and from that comes the release of power from heaven” (pg. 73). Forgiveness also plays a role in the renewing of the mind. “It’s difficult if not impossible to demonstrate the will of God ‘on earth as it is in heaven’ if we don’t think of ourselves as truly forgiven, and if we hang onto a false view of our identity. Enduring Uncertainty tells of pushing through in the midst of storms with a knowing that God had prepared us for that moment we are in and He will see us through it. On Dreaming with God, we read that those dreams unlock deep reservoirs of creativity within  each person, in different areas of gifting and talent.” Dreaming with God makes us co-laborers with Him. Co-workers meaning that without Christ we cannot and without us, He will not doing it. His work on earth is not complete without us. Incredible! Lastly, there is inheriting the supernatural. This comes by the process of the renewing of the mind.

One of my favorite parts in The Supernatural Power of a Transformed Mind is in chapter six – Guilt-free and Forgiven. It quotes Romans 8:38-39 and then says:

“There is no power, no circumstance, no person, no demonic reality, no strategy of the devil, nothing in existence right now in heaven or on earth that can separate you from the love of God.” In light of this, the past is not mentioned, which then says that your past can keep you from the awareness of God and His love and forgiveness.

In reading chapter 8, Enduring Uncertainty, I found this chapter to really resonate within my spirit. It talks about speaking life into the circumstances and situations that you find yourself in as well as having a confidence that God will bring you through it. Sometimes the hardest place to be is between the promise and the coming true. But no matter what happens, we need to stand firm knowing that when we have a promise from God, we have a promise and it is not our job to see that it is made. We aren’t meant to question all of what happens to us. “The suffering will last for but a moment in God’s plan for your life. Be thankful for the opportunity to persevere” (pg. 129).

The effect that The Supernatural Power of a Transformed Mind had on my life is far more than I expected. The revelation of the renewing of the mind being a gateway to bringing heaven to earth and to miracles and walking out a supernatural life-style is so well laid out by Bill Johnson. It has challenged me to live more boldly and with certainty that as I learn to see from heaven’s perspective and declare truth, I will watch heaven invade.

21 Days of Never-the-Same – Day 4

5 Books that Changed Me:

(Obviously God’s word is one of them and one that changes me on a daily basis. But beyond the Word of God, these are other books that captured me and changed me.)

1. Lioness Arising by Lisa Bevere

In “Lioness Arising” Lisa Bevere urges her fellow women to Rise up and recognize their position as a Lioness. This book captivated me so much and I simply could not put it down! This powerful message came in a timely season of my life resulting with a stirring in my heart to awaken and respond.

This title is based on Numbers 23:24 – “These people rise up like a lioness; like a majestic lion they stand.”

Truly, this has been the most powerful book that I have read in a long while. This is the call to rise up like a lioness – combine ease with strength and rest with power and a fierceness combined with gentleness – this is a message like I have never heard before.

Lisa writes, “God did not save you to tame you!”

We are called for more than this! It is time for the women to awaken and to rise up!

This inspirational book is a call to awaken “to a life of fierce passion”, to “wake up and change your world!” I highly recommend that every woman read this! Old or young, there is no mistaking the need for today’s women to take a join voices for the Pride!

2. Love Story  by Nichole Nordeman

Never have I been so quickly captured and captivated by such a book as when I picked up  Love Story: The Hand the Holds Us from the Garden to the Gates. Nichole Nordeman writes with such a depth and rich language that I was stolen by this story. Above all the others, the way she captured the creation story took me the most:

IN THE BEGINNING, God created the heavens and the earth.

Somethingness from nothingness.

Fullness from emptiness.

Presence from vacancy.

The great week of wonder had begun.

If God is God and knows all things past, present, and future…if He already knew about the runaway train on the tracks ahead, why did he create at all? Why bother with every luminous shade of orange on the flimsy wing of a monarch if He knows how the story will end?

Wow! What a start! Like I said, captured!

I don’t think he began and then completed his whole work in a week and then, on rascally serpent and an apple later, had to come up with a redemptive ending on the fly. I don’t think he was standing there in from of trembling Adam and Eve with his hand on his hip thinking, well howdaya like that? Figures.

Of course he knew we would toss a grenade into all that beauty.

Nichole paints an amazing portrait of creation and our current state that one can’t help but be drawn to this book. Finally at the close of the chapter:

. And though it is our capacity for utter darkness and destruction that leaves me wondering why he bothered, it is our capacity to reflect the perfection of his light and love that reveal why he did. Of course he bothered.

It was good then because he was good.

And it will be good always because love knows no other way to be.

3. Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers

This summer, along with the church book club I read a personal favorite of mine –Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers.  Redeeming Love is such a powerful story based on the Old Testament book of Hosea told in a modernized format. I am amazed how beautifully Francine captured the emotion and truth throughout this book. One line from this book haunted me for weeks:

“Would you have her hang on her cross forever?”

For Angel, the main character, she was chained to her past – a life filled with unspeakable horrors. She was delivered, but the physical deliverance did not free her mind. She was so stuck in the shame of where she had been, she didn’t realize that she was free. Her husband Michael tells her this: “You’re free. You just don’t know it yet.”

As Angel returns to her past life, I realized the weight carried in the words: “Would you have her hang on her cross forever?” And that is even when healing comes to your heart, sometimes you have to go back still in order to move forward. Even after healing comes, sometimes the mindset still is where you have been, or who you were. It may be true that the pain is not as prevalent as it was, but you still don’t see how you “fit” in the place that you are now. You are tormented in paradise because you know that you do not deserve to be there.

Going back allows you to see that the you who has been transformed by love does not belong in the past either. It brings a shift in thinking and a recognition of redemption.

In choosing to risk and step out, your heart is transformed by the love of God.

4. Praying God’s Will for Your Life by Stormie O’Martian

“Often the desires of your heart are the desires of His heart, but they still must be achieved His way, not yours, and you must know that it is He who is accomplishing them in yourself. God wants us to stop holding on to our dreams and start holding on to Him so that He can enable us to soar above ourselves and our own limitations. Whenever we let go of what we long for, God will bring it back to us in other dimension.”

5. A Woman’s High Calling by Elizabeth George

I read this several years ago…I don’t remember everything that I read in it. In fact, I probably remember very little. But one thing that I do remember about this book is one story I read in it about a woman who changed the author’s life. She was different than other people and always refreshing to talk to. What was the secret?

She always spoke of the Lord!

No, it wasn’t being super-spiritual, but the Lord was so much a part of her life and of who she was that is what spilled from her mouth.

This became my ambition. I wanted to be like that. God should be so much a part of me and a part of my life that His words flood out of my mouth.

When “Everything” Means So Much More…

I can’t say that I have arrived, but I did believe at some point that I had learned what it meant for Jesus to be my everything. That is, until I read Everything by Mary DeMuth, of which I am privileged to be part of the launch team. (Everything released TODAY, October 16th!)

What does it really mean to have Jesus as your everything? I thought I was doing a pretty good job. I trusted Him when things weren’t going right that He would see it all through. If I lacked anything, I didn’t “need” it because I was okay so long as I had Jesus. There was something I didn’t realize was part of Jesus being everything — that is CONTROL.

That’s right, control.

Mary writes in Everything how control actually hurts our growth. She says, Control is the inner disease of those who need stability and order to function.”

I do NOT do well when I’m not in control. Control gives me stability and I find it to be calming. Little did I realize that it can be an idol.

Everything reads:

“Control keeps us distant from our hearts, our pet sins, and those things we hide. We forget how big God’s reach is, that He can see right past our spiritual facades into our hearts.”

I am so guilty of that. Letting go of control is probably one of the hardest things I had to do, and it is a daily choice to let it go. Daily I have to say, “Lord, have your way. I’m letting go.” When you let go of control, can you really say that He is everything?

It can be scary letting go. But I have found it to be the best way to grow.

When it comes down to this, you realize that “everything” means so much more than the THINGS of this world, it also means cutting loose the strings. Jesus can only be our everything when we don’t hold on to anything else.

Do you have to let go of control today? Or is there something else you need to lay down to make Jesus your everything?

Fierce Beauty – Book Review

Title: Fierce Beauty: Choosing to Stand for What Matters Most

Author: Kim Meeder

Rating: 4.5/5.0

“True beauty is not about how you look but how you live.”  the back cover of Fierce Beauty boasts. I have not read a book this powerful in quite some time. Maybe it was God’s timing when it came to receiving the message that is written in this book. Or maybe it was the inspirational stories. Regardless of what it was, this book helped to bring me to a recognition of the position that I have in the Kingdom of God.

Kim divides this book into three parts: 1) The Problem, 2) The King, and 3) The Warrior. Her message is skillfully woven through inspirational stories from her own life and also include many striking truths and revelations that will leave you wanting more.

Ladies, I highly recommend this to be a book on your summer reading list! It will change your whole paradigm on not only your position in the Kingdom, but also give you a confidence in who and whose you are. You’re not just a pretty face, but a warrior who is about to take territory! Fierce Beauty is a call for women to battle the lies and see the truth once and for all – and to learn to stand for what matters most!

C heck Fierce Beauty out today!
